"Naysayers"
It’s a lack of action which causes failure far more often than wrong action ever will. We fear the beginning, stepping into the unknown. Our minds keep us mired in paralyzing uncertainty. That’s why it is so easy to listen to the braying naysayers. Have you ever wondered how wolves submit to donkeys? You should. Beware.
The radically honest posture of beginning is inherently a posture of doubt. That is why outside voices of even the most well intentioned can do the most harm. Our guard is down, and we miss the fact that they are tripping over themselves just to say, “It’ll never work. You’re too late, should have been earlier. You missed your chance, if you do it now you’ll fail.”
It is an insidious message, but it is one who’s truth is entirely contingent on being self-fulfilled. The only time the naysayers are right is when we decide to not begin, for we always have a choice even if the timing isn’t right. The big goals are derived from the little ones, and the little ones need to happen every day. It’s never the case that succeeding happens all of a sudden. There is always something to be done. Progress is made by agonizingly small increments, inch by inch, slowly in the seconds, minutes, and hours that others let pass by.
Don’t deny the reality of the moment, self-deception leads to self-delusion. There are some things that are beyond our control. But if we plant nothing, then failure is guaranteed. It may be late but sew some seeds anyways. With some luck we just might grow something. Besides, before the onset of winter frost, it’s the late blooming flowers which feed the bees. Amidst the autumn bloom the naysayers will be gnashing their teeth.
